Mattel’s toy doll Barbie has always been portrayed to be able to do anything, with a range of types and accessories, the sky is the limit when it comes to the imagination of those who play with it – then there comes Ken, the male counterpart of Barbie, which has just been seen as Barbie’s trophy boyfriend, or merely just another accessory for Babie.
From “Barbie: Life in the Dreamhouse” to Walt Disney’s Toy Story’s interpretation of the toy doll, Ken was always shown “simping” over Barbie, while Barbie is just being Barbie – and though Ken has other occupations like Barbie, he’s just another Ken to a Barbie.

While the plot of Greta Gerwig’s 2023 “Barbie” revolves essentially around that, people can’t help but wonder: Aren’t Barbie and Ken supposed to be boyfriends and girlfriends? Well… the movie says otherwise, and this viral TikTok video might’ve just explained why Barbie in the movie is just not into Ken romantically.
During the scene in the movie where stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie), along with Gloria (America Ferrera) and her daughter Sasha (Ariana Greenblatt), is on the way to BarbieLand – Gloria shared that she never owned a Ken doll, to which Barbie replied: “That’s because Ken is totally superfluous!” – but that is not the reason Barbie isn’t interested in Ken.
According to TikTok user @/callmeashbash, in the movie, it is implied that Robbie’s Barbie’s subconscious comes from Gloria, who said that she never had a Ken doll, so as a result, Barbie in BarbieLand also subconsciously thinks that she doesn’t need Ken.
