Here’s why you may want to get rid of your belly fat

Seeing these influencers with toned muscles and flat stomachs, we cannot deny that most of us have #bodygoals every time we browse our Instagram feed.

Most of our 2019 New Year’s resolution is to become fit and get rid of “beer belly fat” – unwanted weight from last year’s food mantra. Yes, eating is really fun, especially when we have money to buy and scrumptious food. But eating too much may lead you to acquire belly fat and these fats will reportedly make your brain smaller than its average size.

This study will push you to lose belly fats.

Enough with the dad bods.

A study conducted by the American Academy of Neurology says that men with more belly or visceral fat tend to also have less grey matter—which contains most of the brain’s nerve cells, as well as areas responsible for muscle control, hearing, memory, emotions, speech, decision making, and self-control.

Does it make any sense?

This study also examined the association of body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) with their brain volume of 9,652 men and women. They found that 1,291 people with the highest BMIs and waist-to-hip ratios happened to have the lowest volume of grey matter about three cubic centimeters less than those at a healthy weight.

Supporting this research, another existing study states that brain shrinkage leads to memory decline and has a higher risk of dementia.

“But research on whether extra body fat is protective or detrimental to brain size has been inconclusive,” says study author, Mark Hamer of Loughborough University in Leicestershire, England. </span

Research, however, can’t say whether excess fat affects the grey matter directly or people with less grey matter are more likely to overeat or whether there are other factors to be considered.

This research might push you to try eating more moderately. And even though it will take months or years for us to lose weight, our determination will probably lead us to not only achieve our #bodygoal but this will also allow us to adopt a healthy lifestyle that will benefit us as we get older. InqPOP!
