Ryan Reynolds files for dismissal of Justin Baldoni’s defamation lawsuit

“Deadpool” crosses paths with It Ends With Us once again as reports surface about Ryan Reynolds’ latest legal action against Justin Baldoni amid ongoing lawsuits involving Blake Lively.

On March 18, Reynolds sought a judge’s dismissal of his involvement as a defendant in Baldoni’s $400 million (approximately Php 22.8 million) defamation suit, arguing that the case has “no legal bounds” and merely amounts to “hurt feelings.” The filing was submitted the same day and obtained by CNN.

The document stated that while Baldoni sued Reynolds and his wife, Lively, for calling him a “predator,” the complaint does not argue that Reynolds did not believe his own words. It cited two instances where Reynolds allegedly made the remark, suggesting that this could weaken Baldoni’s defamation case. If Reynolds genuinely believed his statement about Baldoni, it might not be considered defamatory.

Part of the filing goes as follows, noting, “Mr. Reynolds genuinely, perhaps passionately, believes that Mr. Baldoni’s behavior is reflective of a ‘‘predator,”” adding that “calling someone a predator amounts to a constitutionally protected opinion.”

The defendant’s lawyers further cited that Baldoni’s “thin-skinned outrage over a movie character,” a reference to “Nicepool” from Reynolds’ most recent Deadpool franchise, “does not even pretend to be tied to any legal claims.” The legal representatives claimed that the plaintiff’s allegation was simply because he had “hurt feelings.”

While CNN has reached out to representatives for Baldoni’s comment on the matter, a spokesperson for Reynolds told the media outlet, “We look forward to this lawsuit being dismissed.”

All attorneys on both sides of the court had made it clear to the public that they do not intend to settle, as their trial is currently set for March 2026. If Reynolds’ motion for the dismissal of the defamation lawsuit is not granted by the judge, he could then be brought into the legal drama to testify in a highly publicized case.
