‘Good Boy’ delivers a cinematic experience through a dog’s point of view

In addition to being one of the scariest films of the year, Ben Leonberg’s “Good Boy” has been reviewed as a heartfelt and touching ode to the emotional connection that humans have with their four-legged companions.

Following its premiere last March 8 in Texas theater Alamo Lamar 5, viewers came to praise the film’s unique approach in storytelling where golden retriever and good boy himself Indy is set out to protect his owner Todd (played by Leonberg) from being dragged into the afterlife after discovering eerie warnings and unseen presences in their exploring of a haunted house once owned by Todd’s grandfather.

The film’s cinematographer Wade Grebnoel used technical aspects to showcase the “dog’s perspective” by keeping Indy as the visual center of the frame and capturing his human companions from the waist up, maintaining the camera at a low angle.

It had been notable that the film added an emotional touch to viewers by keeping human faces unrelated to the story, given how the cameras were utilized to showcase the thriller, though with very few exceptions that are intimately related to the plot and its concepts.

This was reported to be illustrated by the physical contact (pets, rubs, carrying), food sharing of snacks and leftovers, and the acts of compassion between owner and pet which told audiences that they didn’t need to know Todd’s appearance to know that Indy was loyal to him and that his owner treated him with care.

With an IMDB score of 7.9/10 and 5-star reviews on Letterboxd, more anticipation from awaiting viewers are coming through to watch how exactly Indy the good boy will save the day as he counters the lurking forces that only he is capable of seeing and fighting off, to ultimately protect his best friend and owner Todd.
