‘Shrek 5’ trailer leaves fans divided over character redesigns

The first trailer for Shrek 5 is here, and it looks like Shrek had a glow up. But for many people, the description would be more of a ‘glow down.’

On Friday, the much-anticipated teaser trailer for Shrek 5 was released, sharing a glimpse into the new world of Far, Far Away. In the 27-second clip, OG characters Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey all gather in front of a magic mirror to scroll through a series of Shrek memes. Joining the scene in the trailer are Pinocchio and Felicia, one of Shrek and Fiona’s children.

This brief teaser not only sees the return of Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy, but it also announces the appearance of Zendaya, who will lend her voice to Felicia.

Fans of the Shrek film series were all excited about the return of the beloved ogre on the big screen. They were even more hyped up with the news of Zendaya joining the star-studded cast.

However, the trailer of the film also sparked backlash as other fans were upset with the animation designs. They specifically criticized Shrek and Fiona’s looks, pointing out that the two look like they underwent facelift and nose job procedures.

Some people, on the other hand, defended the character redesigns, explaining that this was inevitable.

Well, I’m not gonna lie, but the revamped looks of our beloved ogres got me feeling… something. But come to think of it, maybe it has something to do with the era we’re living in, where cosmetic surgery has been increasingly normalized. Much like in our world, maybe Far, Far Away is also keeping up with these trends.

Setting aside the redesigns, we’re hoping that Shrek 5 will be just as fun and great as the first four films *fingers crossed*.

Shrek 5 is set to hit theaters in December 2026.
