‘Hating on your oppas’ exes isn’t the way to go,’ Sueweeties tell Miss Karylle

Admiring and loving your KDrama oppas for their talent and skill in acting is harmless, but when you hate on someone involved in their personal life, that’s another thing entirely.

In a recent interview with Sunshine Dizon, Philippine TV personality and singer-songwriter Karylle was asked if she was the type to feel jealous every time news of her favorite oppas dating would surface, to which she immediately said yes.

Karylle

“Yes, with Lee Minho. I’m really jealous when it comes to Lee Minho,” she said in a joking manner. Karylle went on to say that she wouldn’t mention the name of the girl he was with since she’s an ex-girlfriend now, but the fact that she dated 2 of her oppas made her jealous.

“You’ve already had two of them,” Karylle lightly joked and mentioned that she doesn’t “love” this certain girl just for this reason.

The “ex” Karylle was referring to is Bae Suzy, a well-loved singer, actress, and model in South Korea. Known for being a former member of Miss A, a girl group under JYP Entertainment; as well as starring in the dramas ‘Uncontrollably Fond’ and ‘Start Up’, Bae Suzy is a popular figure in her country and abroad.

Reducing someone as talented and accomplished as Suzy to just being someone’s “ex” is insulting, even if it was only a joke. This is why Sueweeties, Suzy’s fans, are calling out Karylle and asking her to apologize for her remarks since she’s a public figure and has most likely gone through a similar situation.

Even if her words were meant to be a joke, Karylle should not have brought down another woman just for dating her favorite actors. Fans (of all ages) should understand that their idols have their own personal lives too, and they’re in no place to look down on the people they surround themselves with just because you’re jealous.

Sueweeties are asking Karylle to apologize for calling Suzy just as “someone’s ex” when she’s clearly more than that. She’s a personality loved by many inside and outside the Korean entertainment industry. She’s highly regarded for being genuine and recently even donated 100 million won to the Happy Sharing Taekwondo Federation to celebrate Children’s Day in South Korea.

Perhaps it’s important for Karylle to consider the opinions of Suzy’s fans and why they may take offense to what she said about her oppas. Regardless of who you are — whether or not you’re a celebrity — everyone deserves to be respected by their own merit, and not based on the people you know.

Those in the public eye should understand the weight of their words, and how they can influence many others to exhibit the same behavior online. Again, degrading someone (a fellow woman in this case) out of spite and jealousy often comes off as misogynistic. It isn’t appreciated anymore and we should all know better by now.
