A look at the Ariana Grande-Josh Stone issue, following ‘7 Rings’ lawsuit settlement

Ariana Grande has settled a lawsuit after being accused of plagiarizing the hook of her song, ‘7 Rings’.

Hip-hop artist Josh Stone claimed that the rhythmic structure and lyrics of the 2019 hit were lifted from his track, ‘You Need It, I Got It.” Apparently he had even consulted “highly regarded musicology experts” who also backed his case. Stone, who performs as DOT, wrote the song two years before Ariana released her single.

Upon first listen, the only comparison you really notice is that the lyrics both contain repeating phrases. In ‘7 Rings’, Ariana Grande sings “I want it, I got it.” While DOT uses “You need it, I got it,” as seen by the song’s title. The defendants stated that Josh Stone had no monopoly over common everyday phrases such as these.

The situation is similar to how Taylor Swift was sued by the owner of the ‘Evermore’ theme park for “stealing their trademark.”

A big part of what sets ‘7 Rings’ apart as well is because it referenced the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical ‘Sound of Music’. The Tony-award winners were given songwriting credit in Ariana’s version.

A judge ordered the dismissal of Stone’s lawsuit because of the settlement, however the terms were not disclosed.

Do you think their songs sound similar? In any case, Ariana still writes her own checks like she writes what she sings so it’s not much to worry about.
