Internationally acclaimed artist Artgerm misses Graphika Manila 2020 over coronavirus fears

World-renowned artist Stanley Lau, popularly known as Artgerm, can’t make it to Graphika Manila 2020 over travel restrictions due to the global spread of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.

Artgerm broke the sad news to his fans via Facebook on Feb. 13, saying he would be missing the annual creativity conference that is being held today, Feb. 15, until tomorrow.

“It pains me to announce that I won’t be attending Manila Graphika 2020 this coming weekend due to the escalating virus outbreak,” he said.

“I’ve been so looking forward to meet all of you who are attending, especially those who come for me specifically. It was a tough decision to make and I promise I will return soon. My sincere apology,”added  Artgerm, who is based in Singapore.

Graphika Manila’s official Facebook page likewise shared the news, and revealed that Artgerm has been replaced by artist Kim Jung Gi to conduct drawing lectures for the two-day event.

“Unfortunately, due to travel restrictions, Artgerm will not be able to speak at Graphika 20/20. We sincerely apologize as this situation is beyond our control. Artgerm promises to be back and we are hopeful to have him next year for Graphika 2021,” the page stated.

Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. yesterday opposed the proposal to include Singapore among those subject to the Philippines’ temporary travel ban over the COVID-19 outbreak. As of Thursday, Singapore has recorded 58 confirmed coronavirus patients, one of the highest number of cases outside of China.

Artgerm, born and raised in Hong Kong, is currently running a full-time diploma course in digital design and illustration in collaboration with the 3dsense Media School in Singapore.

A known illustrator, concept artist, designer and DevianArt star, Artgerm has co-founded digital art studio Imaginary Friends Studios. Their clients include DC Comics, Electronic Arts and Cartoon Network, among others.
