‘Reminder or Victim-Blaming?’: Police station in Southern Leyte draws criticism over ‘anti-rape’ flyer

A post from a Facebook page captured the attention of many social media users, but not for good reasons. It displayed the ‘Anti-Rape IEC Materials’ from a page by a police station in Saint Bernard, Southern Leyte that conveys a message that did not sit well with many.

The page posted a picture of the flyer with the caption ‘LUH,’ intending to highlight the confusion in the flyer regarding how individuals should be aware to prevent rape incidents or acts of violence in the same category.

Like the OP, many were also confused as to why victims were being asked to adjust in such situations. Some also found it insensitive, considering that not all rape cases happen outside.

Meanwhile, some have mentioned that the flyer is on the right track because of the many rape cases in the Philippines. One of the comments stated, “This is more on a reminder and not an invalidation of our right to walk alone at night (or any time of the day).”

Another commenter mentioned that St. Bernard, located in Southern Leyte, is a small town with only a limited number of policemen.

comments to St. Bernard's post
After the post blew up, Pulis St. Bernard’s Facebook page released a statement reiterating their commitment to protecting women and children.

“Any misinterpretation on the IEC material is unintentional as it only serves to remind the public on safety tips,” they added.
