In response to the viral video showing one of its priests shouting at palm frond vendors inside the church grounds on Palm Sunday, the St. Francis of Assisi Parish in Cainta, Rizal, issued a statement clarifying what actually transpired.
The parish claimed the video was “one-sided” and “incomplete,” as it did not show what occurred prior to the moment captured on camera.
In an issued statement on Facebook, St. Francis of Assisi Parish stated that earlier that morning, parish officials had already politely and explicitly urged all vendors to abstain from selling in the church’s private area, both out of respect for the space’s holiness and in compliance with the parish rules.
They further stated that the priest was initially the target of the offensive comments.
“We earnestly ask the faithful to refrain from sharing the video, as it does not reflect the complete picture and may cause further confusion or division,” the parish church said.
They continued adding, “Instead, let us use this moment to pray for healing, unity, and peace in our community. Let us not allow a moment of tension to overshadow the grace of this Holy Week.”
The viral video has received mixed reaction among social media users as the priest was seen repeatedly shouting “labas [get out]” at the palm vendors.
One user wrote, “Kaya maraming umaalis sa Simbahan nyo dahil sa mga ganyang klaseng namumuno sa simbahan. Pagnilayan nyo ang buhay ninyo bilang PARI [That’s why many are leaving your Church because of these kinds of church leaders. Reflect on your life as a PRIEST].”
[Father is not at fault here, they have been reprimanded several times, they still stood their ground. It’s not a marketplace, their goods are more expensive, we bought palms in the church to help with the church expenses. So don’t make a comment if you don’t know the issue].”
“DISGUSTING BEHAVIOR! HYPOCRITE! Naturingan pa naman taong simbahan [You’re still a church person]. Kaya maraming umaalis sa simbahan nyo [That’s why many are leaving your church],” a third user wrote.
Police and church officials are now working together to make sure that church rules are followed.
“We assure you that the matter is being handled internally with prudence, pastoral care, and a commitment to truth and reconciliation. In the spirit of transparency, respect, and healing, we are open to continued dialogue and pastoral accompaniment for those who have concerns,” St. Francis of Assisi Parish said.
