Young couple’s Maranaw wedding video goes viral, raises concerns over age and tradition

A recent viral video showcasing the traditional marriage ceremony has shocked social media users.

The same day edit video was posted by a photography and videography company based in Iligan City, Philippines. The studio shared the wedding ceremony highlights of a 10-year-old and a 14-year-old, a young couple who married according to the traditional culture of the Maranaw people.

“Meet our youngest and super adorable couple Aiman (10) and Jasiya (14) The newly wedd in their Same Day Edit Film. We absolutely love how traditional meranao wedding are making a comeback these days. There’s something so beautiful about heritage and the way it’s woven into this wedding ceremony,” the caption reads.

The video has highlighted cultural traditions of Maranaw people wherein they prepare for the ceremony as if it were at the right age for marriage. According to the video, they see the beautiful perseverance of heritage and how it is slowly going back in today’s time and age.

Meanwhile, social media users were left shocked and concerned through the comments section of the Facebook post. They share different insights from personal thoughts on preserving culture and even leading to the national law to be reflected upon due to the young age of Aiman and Jasiya.

‘Not all culture is worth preserving’ as said by one of the users who saw the video. Even with the respect many may have for different cultures across all sections in our country, many share that it may not be ‘normal’ even with having a different law because of the Maranaw tradition and culture.

Cultural traditions vary widely across the world, and practices outside one’s own experience may not always be understood or accepted. These differences challenge our perceptions of what is considered “normal” while offering an opportunity to broaden our understanding. Recognizing that diverse communities follow distinct customs and rules allows us to appreciate the richness of human culture.

However, should this tradition be questioned, or is it essential to respect and learn from traditions that differ from our own?
