Teachers and educators decry the exploitation of AI in school essays

ChatGPT has proven that it can be an incredibly useful tool for those in a pinch, to say the least. However, teachers and those in the academe have honestly had enough of it.

In a Facebook post, a Filipino teacher shared her thoughts about her students submitting AI-generated outputs. As she was checking her students’ papers, the teacher felt suspicious and decided to run them through a plagiarism checker. Finding nothing amiss, she still had a nagging doubt, prompting her to use an AI detector. Lo and behold—her students had used Artificial Intelligence to write their papers.

The teacher later on added tips on how to find out if a work was AI-generated in the comments section of her post, while also telling her students to not take any shortcuts.

Other posts with the same sentiments also became viral on social media, with the photo attached to it being a paper that’s been copied by hand from ChatGPT.

The reactions to the photo have been divisive—with others lamenting the state of the country’s educational system and the kind of students we have, and others supporting the proper use of AI and how it should be taught in schools.

On one hand, the teachers (especially English teachers) are right about their feelings of disappointment over their students misusing AI tools in their school outputs. It feels as if one were hit at the gut when students don’t give some sort of appreciation for the things you’re trying to teach them.

Many are also right about saying how students are becoming more and more reliant on technology nowadays, choosing the easy way out rather than exerting the effort of learning things without it. Well, what can we do, right? We’re no longer living in a time where technology is limited to more un-serious things for the general public.

Learning in the so-called “old-fashioned” way is turning out to be obsolete for the current and future generations, which is why we, despite feeling apprehensive about AI, must teach them on how to use these tools properly.

We have to admit it—AI can be or IS a useful tool for many. But, with how much people have been using it in the wrong ways, it can be abused and become a threat to many things, including education. Artificial Intelligence cannot be used without analytical skills on hand, which is what this current generation of students is lacking…quite horrendously.

One thing that teachers and educators can do is to promote the helpful use of Artificial Intelligence in the classroom through learning workshops. What better way to help students learn and evolve with the times than by doing it with them, right? It’s never too late to help in curbing that glaring lack of analytical skills in and out of the classroom.

Teachers and educators just have to adapt to the times, as well. We can lament and reminisce about those times when we were only left with books, papers, the Internet (when it was still mainly used for fun times), and our brains when doing our school work, but times are different now.

Artificial Intelligence can be scary, but when used correctly, it can be a great tool. (Still, we hate AI when it takes jobs meant for humans).
