BGYO celebrates third year of debut anniversary, addresses bullying allegations

In a TikTok video posted on January 25, 2024, P-pop group BGYO sought to celebrate their approaching 3rd anniversary through ‘Bonfire Confessions’ with Director Laurenti “Direk Lauren” Dyogi.

BGYO (formerly Star Hunt Academy Boys or SHA Boys) is a five-member Filipino boy band, comprised of Akira, Gelo, JL, Mikki, and Nate, formed in 2018 by ABS-CBN Star Hunt Academy. The group debuted on January 29, 2021, under Star Magic, ABS-CBN.

From the beginning of the video, the P-pop group highlighted their unforgettable and significant experiences following their debut, including brand endorsements, album releases, award shows, landing the #2 spot on Billboard’s Next Big Sound Chart, and of course, the Grammys list and TeenVOGUE exposures, which continues to inspire them in making music.

The group also reminisced other memories with the following video ‘Best Compliments.’

The subject of the post gradually shifted from simple kumustahan and nostalgia to discussing the group’s unpleasant experiences, such as the negative comments they encountered and the presence of haters in their professional lives.

“Ever since debut song, sobrang daming may ayaw satin compared sa iba. Parang lahat na lang ng galaw natin [Ever since the debut song, there are so many people who dislike us compared to others. It’s like in every move we do, they hate us],” Mikki said. “So far, kami lang po ‘yung hindi part nung P-pop rise. Yun po yung nararamdaman namin. Parang kami pa yung kalaban kahit na tumutulong na nga tayo iangat [So far, we are not part of the P-pop rise. That’s how we feel. We are like the enemy even if we help to make it rise],” he added.

They also talked about the accusations made against them, which included being bullies and being violent. “Kasi kami Direk, lalake po kasi. Parang normal naman po siguro yung asaran. Kasi kapag kami po ‘yung nag-aasaran, asaran lang po talaga na parang totoo [We’re men. So, teasing seemed to be normal. When we tease each other, it’s just genuine teasing and nothing more],” said Akira. “Never po kaming nanakit. Even now po kapag nag-aasaran kami, ‘yung trip ng mga ‘to, hindi s’ya bullying Direk e [We never hurt others. Even now when we tease each other, when they’re tripping, it’s not bullying Direk.”

In response to all of the allegations, the members gave their cents, emphasizing that while disagreements and miscommunications will inevitably arise, bullying will never occur since all of their “kulitan” and “asaran” moments are solely expressions of their brotherly love for one another.
