Cary Joji Fukunaga’s No Time to Die, Paul Thomas Anderson’s Licorice Pizza, and Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story are all tied with five nominations each.
In a press release published by BAFTA, they revealed that there are 19 nominees in performance categories who received their first nominations, including Ariana DeBose of West Side Story, Alana Haim of Licorice Pizza, Woody Norman of C’mon C’mon, Joanna Scanlan of After Love and Will Smith of King Richard. These first-time nominees are BAFTA’s evidence of their “commitment to supporting and recognizing new talent” in the film industry.
BAFTA also mentioned that there are equal numbers of female and male directors nominated in Best Director, while there are up to 70 female nominees across all categories. According to them, this is “the highest [female nominees] in the last five years.”
The 2022 BAFTA film awards will be held on March 13 at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The awards show will be hosted by Australian comedian and actor Rebel Wilson, who had previously delivered a monologue about COVID-19, Cats, and the lack of female nominees in the 2020 BAFTAs.
