A day of power for a day of change: Ley La Salle’s Voter’s Education Webinar

In this pandemic-ridden world, democracy matters more than ever. It is all more important to know our rights and how to best exercise our freedom through voting. This is what Ley La Salle, a premier organization in De La Salle University for legal management students and aspiring lawyers, advocates for.

One of the benefits of living in a democracy is that the people have the capability to place people in the government and to remove them if the need calls for it, to form a government, through elections, that will represent them and their ideals as a nation. Everyone aspires to be able to live in a country where the government is competent, progressive, and always takes into consideration the wellbeing of its citizens, this is only made possible through the actions of educated voters.

Ley La Salle Voter's Education Webinar

In line with this goal, Ley La Salle will be organizing an event entitled A Day of Power: Voter’s Education Webinar (VEW) which will be scheduled on May 22, 2021 (Saturday), from 2:00 – 4:00 pm via Zoom and Ley La Salle’s official Facebook page. The event aims to immerse voters with impartial knowledge about the current situation of the country’s voting system, importance of voting, and ways to become a responsible voter. With the on-going pandemic curbing people’s access to education, the event seeks to disseminate voting education through webinar to reach the people from all walks of life at their homes, offices, or anywhere they can be.

For this event, three speakers from the academic sector, government sector, and the youth sector will share their insights related to an educated voting: Dr. Cleo Calimbahim, a political analyst and political science professor in De La Salle University, Director James Jimenez, Commission on Elections (COMELEC) spokesperson, and Mr. Raoul Daniel Manuel, a youth speaker at Kabataan Partylist.

Dr. Calimbahim will discuss how a candidate’s victory is determined by properly choosing which demographics to campaign to and how they can reach these populace. Whereas Director Jimenez will answer the questions, who, what, where, when, why, and how with regards to the voter registration in the Philippines. Mr. Manuel will share his analysis about the youth’s participation in the May 2022 elections. All of these topics combined will help the voters have a semblance of an educated vote in the upcoming elections. With their expertise in their respective fields, the speakers will impart their knowledge on the significance of the human’s right to vote, strategies of engaging in educated voting, and their analysis about the political climate of the Philippines.

Ley La Salle believes that voting education will help mold the citizens’ critical thinking skills of choosing which among the potential candidates of the upcoming elections will be great leaders and potential allies to all sectors, including the marginalized. Ley’s Voter’s Education is one of those avenues that teaches its participants to understand the power they have in their hands as voters. Complete with various renowned speakers from the field of Philippine politics, joining Ley’s Voter Education is an absolute must. Participants will be able to get a wider perspective on the role that they have as voters and how their vote, while being properly educated on it, is indeed capable of “rocking the boat”, creating a good future for the Philippines.

Students and adults, even the younger and non-registered voters, are welcome to join the said event. To register for the upcoming event, you can access the pre-registration form through this link: Bit.ly/LEYts-Vote-In_VEW_PreReg only until May 21, 2021 (Friday).
