Happy Independence Day to all of us Filipinos! Maligayang Araw ng Kasarinlan sa ating lahat!
On this special day, we celebrate our country’s freedom from decades of colonization under foreign rule, and the people who have fought with their lives to achieve it. In honor of the Philippines’ Independence Day, Filipinos everywhere conduct flag-raising events, reenact the symbolic event in Kawit, Cavite, and post tributes on social media.
And of course, in true millennial and Gen Z fashion, internet users post memes and fictional accounts of historical events using the tag, RP612fic. With RP meaning “Republic of the Philippines”, 612 referring to the date of Philippine Independence, and fic meaning “fiction”, people post alternative historical accounts and insert pop culture references in history on social media.
The tag is especially popular on Twitter, reaching the social media platform’s top Trending list annually. This tag is in not unpatriotic in nature and would only want to promote the Philippines’ history as a country – in an amusing manner, that is.
Don’t worry, we’re patriotic, I swear. We love the Philippines.
