When you’re an adult, many times, you tend to forget what it’s like to truly enjoy Christmas. And who can blame you? Considering the fast-paced nature of events nowadays and your busy schedule at work, it can be really difficult to find time to absorb everything that the holiday season has to offer. However, that doesn’t mean you should say “bah humbug” and be done with the yuletide festivities. In fact, you should do the opposite of that, as the holidays are the perfect time to take things slow and appreciate the people you love most. Doing this may even lead you to find joy, inspiration, and of course, love.
This is the sentiment expressed in the movie, Coming Home For Christmas, and one of the main reasons why you should watch it this holiday season!
The 2017 Christmas rom-com follows Elizabeth “Lizzie” Richfield (Danica McKellar), a young woman who’s recently been down on her luck. Unemployed and newly single, Lizzie decides to use this time to find something that truly inspires her. And as luck would have it, Lizzie’s sister recommends her to take the job of “house manager” at breathtaking Ashford estate. With nowhere else to go and nothing else to do, Lizzie accepts the job only to find that her employers are a complicated group of individuals.
The 90-year-old matriarch Pippa (Paula Shaw), for instance, is a stubborn and guarded woman whose complicated relationship with her eldest grandchild Robert Marley (Neal Bledsoe) puts a strain on the Christmas festivities. And to make matters worse, Lizzie finds herself in a love triangle between the Marley brothers Robert and Kip (Andrew Francis).
These scenarios will definitely have viewers asking: Can Lizzie really reunite the Marley family in time for Christmas? Will she choose Robert or Kip by the end of the movie? What will Lizzie learn about herself in the process?
Luckily, romance fans won’t have to search the deep webs to watch the film as it is currently being streamed on iflix. And in case you needed more convincing to watch it, here are 3 reasons why it’s the Christmas movie you’ve been waiting for.
We’ve all been Lizzie at one point in our lives
Being let go by the company she works for and denying an engagement from a man she once loved, Lizzie was stuck in that “in-between” place where she felt like she didn’t belong anywhere–a situation many of us are all too familiar with. Because at one point in our lives, every one of us has found ourselves lost and searching for meaning. We’ve all experienced having to pick ourselves up after failure and learn to move forward. And this film exemplifies the scenario well through Lizzie’s character arc.
The essence of Christmas rings true in the film
The central theme of the holiday season has always been family. It’s one of the only times in a year wherein siblings, uncles, aunts, cousins, and even distant relatives gather together to reconnect and reignite the love they share for one another.
In the film, the relationships between the Marley family members hold complex and somewhat deep-seated issues that many may believe can never be resolved. But through Lizzie’s “can do” attitude and optimistic demeanor, she’s able to remind the Marleys of the true meaning of Christmas, which is love and family.
You’ll swoon over the romantic scenes
What makes or breaks any chick flick is the chemistry between the protagonist and his/her love interest. In the case of Coming Home For Christmas, the cast was able to deliver swoon-worthy performances that’ll leave viewers in a state of kilig (romantic excitement). This is particularly evident in the scene wherein Lizzie is made to choose between the fun and adventurous Kip or the sweet yet reserved Robert.
