Queen Elizabeth II’s very first post on Instagram showed a video of her during her visit to London’s Science Museum, which featured a letter sent by 19th-century mathematician and computer pioneer Charles Babbage to Queen Victoria’s husband, Prince Albert.

Queen Elizabeth II wrote, “Today, I had the pleasure of learning about children’s computer coding initiatives and it seems fitting to me that I publish this Instagram post, at the Science Museum which has long championed technology, innovation and inspired the next generation of inventors.”

She then signed the post with “Elizabeth R.”, marking her first official upload on the social media platform.

Today, as I visit the Science Museum I was interested to discover a letter from the Royal Archives, written in 1843 to my great-great-grandfather Prince Albert.  Charles Babbage, credited as the world’s first computer pioneer, designed the “Difference Engine”, of which Prince Albert had the opportunity to see a prototype in July 1843.  In the letter, Babbage told Queen Victoria and Prince Albert about his invention the “Analytical Engine” upon which the first computer programmes were created by Ada Lovelace, a daughter of Lord Byron.  Today, I had the pleasure of learning about children’s computer coding initiatives and it seems fitting to me that I publish this Instagram post, at the Science Museum which has long championed technology, innovation and inspired the next generation of inventors. Teas aren’t the only thing the British are popular for. Female ‘Brits,’ for instance, are recognized for wearing hats during a plethora for formal and traditional occasions. And the Queen herself is no exception to this, as we’ve seen her wearing these festive headpieces since she assumed the throne from her father.

So, we’re excited to see whether the Queen will post something ‘hat-related’ that would make us go to the nearest store and buy one for ourselves!
