Vice Ganda warns against fake news amid circulating false claims

Vice Ganda urged viewers to stay vigilant against false information in a recent episode of the noontime show “It’s Showtime.”

Ang lala ng fake news ngayon. Ang lala ng false information lalong-lalo na sa Facebook, sa lahat ng social media. Mag-ingat po kayo . [Fake news is getting worse right now. False information is very bad, especially on Facebook, on all social media platforms. Please be careful],” the host stated.

She also emphasized the importance of verifying information before believing or reposting content seen on social media.

Addressing the spread of false statements online, she clarified, “Hindi po totoo ‘yun. Kung gusto n’yong makakuha ng statement namin, pumunta kayo sa mga sarili naming accounts, ‘yung mga legit na account po namin [That is not true. If you want to get a statement from us, go to our accounts, our legit accounts].”

The statement came after a post by the actor circulated, expressing support for former President Rodrigo Duterte, who was arrested on March 11.

The fake post stated, “Ayaw kong magpaka-hiporotO ha, aminin natin nung time ni FPRRD, karamihan ng  adik nagbagong buhay, karamihan sa kriminal nauunang sumuko, dahil sa takot kay Duterte [I don’t want to be a hypocrite. Let’s admit it, during FPRRD’s time, many addicts changed their lives, and most criminals surrendered first out of fear of Duterte.]”

Not only did Vice Ganda fall victim to fake news, but another “It’s Showtime” host, Kim Chiu, was also targeted. The false claim alleged that Chiu said the former president deserved to be jailed.

She later clarified the issue in a post and wrote, “Sir, wag po kayo mandamay sa nanahimik na tao [Sir, please don’t drag innocent people into this]. May God bless you, your family, and your peace of mind.”

On March 11, Duterte was taken to Villamor Air Base after being arrested upon his arrival at Ninoy Aquino International Airport from Hong Kong.
