A brand new year calls for a fresh set of K-dramas to look forward to as fans await new pairings and story adaptations to premiere across various streaming platforms.

The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call

Starting the year strong with the recent January 24 release of a new fan-favorite medical K-drama with ‘Heroes on Call’ starring Ju Ji-Hoon playing the role of Baek Kang Hyuk. He is a genius trauma surgeon who joins a struggling trauma team in a university hospital. With Kang Hyuk’s exuding confidence in his skills and unconventional ways, he walks a thin line between his current team. The drama follows how Kang Hyuk will successfully lead his team of doctors to become a top-tier trauma unit.

When The Stars Gossip

‘When The Stars Gossip’ marked the comeback of the series lead, Lee Min-Ho and Gong Hyo-Jin to the small screen. Min-Ho plays the role of Gong Ryong, an obstetrician who payed a big sum of money to become a space tourist. He then meets Hyo-Jin’s character Eve Kim, an uptight commander and space scientist who will fatefully cross paths with Gong Ryong.

However, since the drama premiered last January 4, it seemed that it has not attracted enough viewers, despite the two big names in the industry starring in the show coupled with a $34.9 million budget, it hit an all-time low of around 1% record rating five episodes in. This might be upsetting news for Min-Ho but also more so for Hyo-Jin whose dramas have always turned out to be fan favorites and took the time to return to working on a series since the success of ‘When the Camellia Blooms’ back in 2019. But, hopes are not lost as the drama still has a few more episodes to bounce back from its ratings.

Newtopia

Blackpink member Jisoo will soon mark her second drama series with ‘Newtopia’ coming this February 7. Get ready to binge watch a survival zombie show sprinkled with romance on the side. Jisoo will star as Kang Young-Joo, dubbed as the “Goddess of the Engineering Department” during her time in the university and now works as a rookie employee at a company. Park Jeong-Min, portraying Lee Jae-Yoon will be Young-Joo’s love interest, a soldier who is uncertain about his future. Both of them will have to navigate their way around the danger swathing around Seol with an infectious zombie virus.

Black Salt Dragon

Predicted to be the next big rom-com in K-drama land right after Valentine’s day, February 17, is ‘Black Salt Dragon’ or ‘My Dearest Nemesis.’ There’s truly nothing better than an enemies to lovers starring True Beauty’s Moon Ga-Young as Baek Soo-Jung and Twinkling Watermelon’s Choi Hyun-Wook as Ban Joo-Yeon. A leader of a planning team at the best department store in the country, Soo-Jung is a determined and strong willed woman. Then comes her new boss, Joo-Yeon, for whom she met in their teenage years through an online game, where he used the game ID “Black Salt Dragon,” and has since become Soo-Jung’s archemesis. As their worlds collide 16 years later, with an unresolved teenage angst, there is much to anticipate the satisfying banters of the two for the upcoming show.

When Life Gives You Tangerines

K-drama fans were surely delighted when the announcement came that two big Korean stars, IU and Park Bo-Gum would be paired for an upcoming drama, with a target release date of March 7. The romance slice-of-life set on the dreamy Jeju Island back in the 1950s where Ae-Sun, played by IU is a rebellious girlwho  meets the “unyielding iron” Gwan-Sik characterized by Bo-Gum and goes about on their adventures in the countryside.

Resident Playbook

Resident playbook

The much-awaited ‘Hospital Series spinoff, ‘Resident Playbook’ has finally confirmed its premier plans after experiencing significant delays back in 2024 due to the medical strike in South Korea where doctors, residents, and interns protested to increase the medical school enrollment quota.

On January 23 of this year, tvN finally confirmed the new release date of the drama slated for the month of April, but with no specific date yet. The drama will follow the lives of OB-GYN residents at the Jongno satellite branch of Yulje Medical Center starring Go Youn-Jung, Shin- Shin-A, Han Ye-Ji, Kang Young-Seok, and Jung Joon-Won.
