Chef Tatung steps down as host of the Filipino cooking show ‘Simpol’

Pinoys love their food as much as they love a good and relatable cooking show. This is what made Chef Myke “Tatung” Sarthou of digital cooking show ‘Simpol’ close to the hearts of both professional and home cooks especially those who wish to prepare simple yet appetizing local dishes.

In a Facebook post, Tatung has since stepped down as the main host of the show last January 23 to “open the door to new opportunities.”

Sarthou utilized the breadth of his knowledge as a culinary expert when he started ‘Simpol,’ which he claims to be his “brainchild.” Eventually, he became a prominent culinary figure online through his video tutorials of Filipino and has made cooking along with its process accessible to a wider audience whether you’re a seasoned cook or just starting to find your way into the kitchen.

Following Sarthou’s departure from ‘Simpol,’ social media users turned to the comment section to share their gratitude to Sarthou for sharing his talent and skills to his followers. Many have expressed how the Chef introduced them to cooking and showed that it need not be a complicated endeavor.

Other social media users have also shared how far they have come in their own culinary career, even having established their own cafe, all the while learning from Sarthou. Some are even devout followers ever since the pandemic, which marked the early days of ‘Simpol,’ where at the height of quarantine, many have found their passion for cooking and resourcefully creating dishes even with limited ingredients due to the past circumstances.

Apart from his presence online, Sarthou is also a successful restaurateur, owning five restaurants. He is also a best-selling author for his cookbooks, ‘Simpol,’ ‘Dish Karte,’ ‘Young Chef’s Cookbook,’ and ‘Baking Simpol,’ which earned multiple Gourmand Awards. Sarthou is also a Filipino pride on the international culinary scene as a resource speaker on an episode of a Netflix show ‘Street Food.’

With an extensive culinary background and credentials attached to his name, Sarthou connected well with the unique challenges and joys of home cooking, earning him a beloved reputation in the kitchen. Social media users readily attest to his excellence and ability to inspire, “You walked so we can run. You changed the landscape of celebrating Filipino food through your restaurants, shows, and books. Nag-iisa ka [You’re one of a kind], Chef tatung!”
