The memefication of ‘Barbie’: ‘Barbie’s first trailer sets social media abuzz

Life in plastic has been proven to be fantastic in the first teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated live-action film, Barbie.

On December 17, Warner Bros. released the first teaser trailer for the Greta Gerwig-directed film, Barbie, starring Margot Robbie as the titular doll and Ryan Gosling as Ken.

The minute-long clip begins with a scene that references Stanley Kubrick’s 1968 sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey, which sees children playing with baby dolls.

“Since the beginning of time, since the first little girl ever existed, there have been dolls,” Helen Mirren narrates in the background. “But the dolls were always and forever baby dolls, until…”

Donning a black-and-white swimsuit that paid homage to the first-ever released Barbie doll, Robbie enters the scene as a 100-foot-tall Barbie. After winking at the children, a video montage flashes on the screen, showing off Barbie’s ensemble cast, including Ryan Gosling, Simu Liu, and Issa Rae.

Alongside Robbie, Gosling, Liu, and Rae, the film’s cast also includes Will Ferrell, Nicola Coughlan, Kate McKinnon, Michael Cera, Hari Nef, Rhea Perlman, and America Ferrera. The film also serves as a reunion for the Sex Education cast members Ncuti Gatwa, Connor Swindells, and Emma Mackey as they are also part of the star-studded lineup.

While nothing is known that much about the film’s plot, Barbie surely looks like a promising film. It even caught quite a buzz as fans were reeling with excitement.

Take a look at some of the best memes and hilarious reactions about the live-action film:

This wasn’t the first time that Barbie made online waves. Earlier this year, some behind-the-scenes photos emerged online, including Robbie sporting an all-pink, cowboy ensemble, and Robbie and Gosling donning 80s-inspired retro rollerblading gear.

Barbie is helmed by Gerwig, who also served as a writer along with her partner Noah Baumbach.

Barbie is slated for a theatrical release on July 21, 2023.
