5 years after we’ve seen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on the big screen where “all is well” in the end, J. K. Rowling takes us back to a different era of the wizarding world with Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
As we take on another magical adventure in the wizarding world, here are a few fantastic reasons why you shouldn’t miss Fantastic Beasts:
1. Hearing “Hedwig’s Theme” from Harry Potter once again brings back so many magical memories!
It’s been 15 years since we first heard it in cinemas while watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. God, we’re old!
2. It takes you to a new era of the wizarding world.
Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them takes place 70 years before Harry Potter read a copy of the book in Hogwarts. Set in 1926, New York, the story revolves around magical creatures who escaped to the city from Newt Scamander’s briefcase.
3. Before Hagrid, there was Newt Scamander who loved and rescued magical creatures.
Newt is a magizoologist whose interest is protecting, rescuing, and caring for magical creatures — trying to convince others that they can be more of a friend than a harmful creature.
4. You get to see how different the Wizarding World in America is.
The US counterpart of the Wizard’s Council (Ministry of Magic) in Great Britain is called Magical Congress of the United States of America (MACUSA), headed by Seraphina Picquery as president. They call Muggles “No-Maj” or non-magical creatures — basically us mere humans.
5. Plot twists! Plot twists everywhere!
Like in every Harry Potter film that came before, plot twists are everywhere. You’ll have to see the movie or read the book to know what I mean. Suffice it to say that the plot twist in Fantastic Beasts will be familiar to anyone who has seen Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. *wink wink*
6. J. K. Rowling wrote the screenplay herself.
For the first time, J. K. Rowling wrote the screenplay for a movie adaptation of her book, so you can expect that it’s going to be faithful to her vision. The full movie script has also been released in book form for all you HP completists out there.
7. And the best part, we get to have four more Fantastic Beasts movies after this one!
J. K. announced last month that the Fantastic Beasts franchise will span 5 movies, meaning we might get to see more of Grindelwald and Dumbledore!
