MAPPA gives a status update on the ‘Yuri on Ice’ movie

MAPPA has given us a production update on the sequel movie to the highly popular 2016 anime Yuri on Ice. This anime captivated fans back when it was newly released for its stunningly smooth animation and the characters in the story. Fans have waited for more Yuri on Ice content, and it seems that we are closer and closer to getting some.

According to its official website, Yuri on ICE The Movie: ICE ADOLESCENSCE is still in the works. Unfortunately, MAPPA can’t give us a release date yet. This is what the full message says on the site:

“The production of ‘YURI!!! on ICE the movie: ICE ADOLESCENCE’ is still ongoing with the aim of further enriching the film. However, we have not yet reached the stage where we can announce the release date. Our team will continue to work diligently to deliver a film and share our unwavering love and dedication for skating. We deeply apologize to all fans for the circumstance and ask for your generous understanding.”

Along with the production status update for the film, MAPPA also dropped a key visual to commemorate the series’ 5th year of broadcasting. The key visual features Yuri Katsuki and Vikto Nikiforov in the foreground, while Yurio (Yuri Plistesky) and Otabek Altin can be seen in the background. The illustration was made in collaboration with Japanese sportswear brand Mizuno.

The Yuri on Ice movie was first announced back in April 2017, and MAPPA had released a beautiful teaser trailer for the film last November 2020.

Will we finally be seeing more Yuri on Ice this year? Hopefully, we will, but we’ll have to keep our eyes on MAPPA and their announcements. Patience is key though, as it’s clear that the studio is taking their precious time in order to give the fans the highest quality product that they deserve – especially since it’s been almost 5 years since the anime first aired.
