Guillermo del Toro shows a new approach to ‘Pinocchio’ in its first teaser

The first teaser trailer of Academy Award-winning Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio was released on Monday. In the trailer, the footage revealed Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket, the dapper narrator who lived in “the heart of a wooden boy.”

“I want to tell you a story. It’s a story you may think you know, but you don’t. Not really,” McGregor said in the teaser. He added, “You see, I, Sebastian J. Cricket, was there. As a matter of fact, I lived, actually lived, in the heart of the wooden boy.”

Set during Benito Mussolini’s 1930 reign in Italy, del Toro’s adaptation of Pinocchio follows the story of a wooden puppet who comes to life. Unlike the classic story of Carlo Collodi, this stop-motion film is much darker as the audience will see Pinocchio’s mischievous and disobedient adventures in his pursuit of a place in the world.

The director had previously told Variety, “In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend.”

He then continued, “He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world.”

He also shared that he has wanted to make the movie “for as long as I can remember.”

del Toro is joined by Mark Gustafson who co-directs the film while Patrick McHale co-writes the script. Lisa Henson produced the film through the Jim Henson company, along with Alex Bulkley, Corey Campodonico, and Gary Ungar.

Joining McGregor in the film are David Bradley as Geppetto and Gregory Mann as the titular character. Finn Wolfhard, Cate Blanchett, John Turturro, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Burn Gorman, Christoph Waltz, and Tilda Swinton will also join the ensemble.

del Toro’s Pinocchio will premiere in December 2022 on Netflix. del Toro’s Pinocchio is different from Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of the same name which starred Tom Hanks, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Lorraine Bracco.
