Step aside, Rosé and CL make k-pop idol history at the Met Gala

The Met Gala is always something to look forward to each year, and for good reason. As much as it is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute for New York City, it is mostly known to be as “fashion’s biggest night out”, with Hollywood A-listers and personalities stepping out and gracing the Met Gala carpet with fashion pieces embodying the theme of the night.

The event is known for exhibiting some of the most memorable outfits and high-fashion pieces to grace the industry. One can’t not associate the Met Gala without looking back at 2018’s theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination”, and recalling Rihanna’s iconic Margiela pope and Chadwick Boseman’s custom-made Versace ensemble.

For 2021, the Met Gala finally returns after being postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Shifting away from its “first Monday of May” schedule, this year’s Met Gala falls exactly right in the middle of fashion month. Celebrities, stars, and other personalities are sure to dress up in pieces expressing this year’s theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”

But amidst the glamour and stellar fashion decked by famous artists and designers tonight, two females stand out the most. K-Pop stans probably heard the news already as of writing, but we just have to say it again: Rosé from BLACKPINK and solo K-Pop artist CL has just debuted on the Met Gala red carpet!

They’re the first two female K-Pop idols to ever stand and grace the Met Gala’s carpet, and they both looked absolutely stunning.

News of Rosé attending the Met Gala this year had been abuzz for the last few days, surprising most fans with her sudden appearance in New York in a fitting for Yves Saint Laurent—it’s a worldwide known fact that the BLACKPINK singer is the ambassador and muse for the famous fashion house.

She arrived at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the red carpet alongside YSL’s Creative Director Anthony Vaccarello, dressed in a chic little black dress accented with a white bow. She also accessorized with a choker and dazzling dangle earrings.

The “Hello Bitches” singer and rapper CL surprised most K-Pop fans the most with her sudden Met Gala appearance. Back when she was still the leader and member of 2NE1, CL had already graced fashion runways and sat in the front row at fashion shows of famous designers. It’s not a surprise for her to get an invite to Met Gala, but it’s been a long time coming.

CL wore a large blue denim coat with white briefs, bearing a resemblance to the Statue of Liberty and a nod to her Korean culture. Her whole ensemble was designed by Alexander Wang, and she looked divine.

Fans of the two K-Pop stars were ecstatic to see their favorites on the *ahem* world’s biggest night of fashion, with their photos circulating all over social media and praises for their fashion pieces. Fans also applauded as these two made history as the first female K-Pop artists to attend the Met Gala.

It’s also good to note that K-Pop idol attendees of the Met Gala in its previous years were all male, starting with “Gangnam Style” singer PSY and Super Junior’s Siwon in 2013, K-Pop legend Rain in 2015, and EXO’s Lay in 2019.

Everyone better set their eyes on Rosé and CL, because they just keep on serving looks everywhere they go. Slay it, queens!
