Blocked fire hydrant in Quezon City raises questions after fire razes hundreds of homes

A Facebook post about a fire hydrant that could have helped lessen the damage from a fire in Quezon City has caught the attention of Filipinos online.

“In 2023, someone extended his perimeter wall and obstructed the valves for this yellow hydrant on Sct Ojeda in Quezon City,” their post reads.

OP wrote to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) in January 2024 to report the obstruction, which violates the Fire Code. “They sent a couple of inspectors who agreed that the extended wall did violate the law. But nothing happened after,” they wrote.

In March, he wrote to the BFP again to follow up on the matter. In response, they sent a couple of firemen to inspect the hydrant. The issue was also reported to the barangay, but unfortunately, it remained unresolved.

They even asked, “Hihintayin pa ba nating magkasunog [Will you wait until there’s a fire]?”

The OP emphasized that the damage from the fire, which burned hundreds of houses just across the street from their home, could have been much less if the 20 fire engines had been able to tap into the obstructed yellow hydrant.

Social media users took to the comments to share their thoughts on the situation.

One user wrote, “A costly learning which could have been prevented if only .…”

“The big question sir now is… what will they do with the blockage? They should penalize the owner of the property,” a second user wrote.

A third user wrote, “Ang ending, nagkasunog na pero wala pa din mangyayari sa obstruction sa hydrant [In the end, there’s fire already but still nothing will happen to the obstruction of the hydrant].”
