Due to the politician’s stance on same-sex marriage, content creator Sassa Gurl has decided to withdraw her support for senatorial candidate Heidi Mendoza.
With choosing “qualified no” in passing the SOGIE Bill, Mendoza said that “with the existing legal and enabling environment, there are many things that need to be explored if we are to protect everyone from unjust discrimination and abuse.” She then hopes that this won’t be a single issue based on choosing a candidate and that she is willing to listen.
Sassa Gurl stated that while she respects the former commissioner of the Commission of Audit (COA), she withdrew her support for her in a post on X (formerly Twitter) last April 8.
“Iginagalang ko po ang tindig ni Mam Heidi Mendoza hingil sa usapin ng marriage equality kaya ikinalulungkot ko pong ipinapaalam na binabawi ko po ang aking suporta. Hiling ko rin po ang inyong pang-unawa sa aking naging desisyon. Paumanhin at pasasalamat po sa inyo [I am respecting Mam Heidi Mendoza’s stance on the issue regarding marriage equality, so I regret to announce that I am withdrawing my support. I hope for your understanding of my decision. My apology and thanks to you],” her post reads.
Mendoza then wrote, “No problem!” after reposting the content creator’s statement. “Maraming maraming salamat pa din [Still thank you very much].”
No problem! Maraming maraming salamat pa din. 💜🤗 https://t.co/wMa22NIxe0

Sassa Gurl’s decision drew criticism and confusion online, with many questioning her reasons for withdrawing support.
She didn’t lie though. Alam nyang mawawalan sya ng supporters but still nanindigan sya sa kanyang paniniwala.
Bakit pag hindi pabor satin, ang bilis mag bago ng isip? https://t.co/XGN73YtvgT

So kapag nag-YES si Camille Villar, siya ang isusupport mo? As a gay and part of LGBT community, nasa satin ang problema wala sa straight citizens. Madami pang issue, usapin at problema na dapat unahin. I’m a gay and will still support HEIDI MENDOZA! Use your platform wisely. TY https://t.co/lqlAXsupcB

May question ako! Do we not vote a candidate if may missing sa platform? Kasi tama ung comment ng isa, if not her, sino? PDPLaban candidates? BBM slate? I mean, she listens naman vs other candidates who don’t at puppet lang. Non tibak opposition slate is VERY SLIM. https://t.co/Ac0RmQH98l

I'm still voting for Heidi. There's no perfect candidate but w/ her track record & policy platforms, she can fix the shitty bureaucracy
I wish Sassa could have taken this time to educate her audience with alternative progressive candidates to keep the ball rolling on our side. https://t.co/Ko2Ti48lAM pic.twitter.com/kovHwv2vwI

Yun lang ba ang criteria mo Sassa? How about yung platform against corruption? https://t.co/BvRyAhkh4V

Meanwhile, others came to the content creator’s defense, arguing that she had every right to change her stance.
nag-effort yung tao pumunta sa brunch na yun at mapakinggan pero dedemahin lang din pala. let her be kung ayun ang desisyon nya.

Eto di ko magets, bakit nyo inaaway si Sassa? Eh at least sya nakausap nya mismo si Heidi.
And the fact na she had to say this SAYS A LOT about Heidi.

Back in March, Sassa Gurl stated that she would support Mendoza in the May 2025 midterm elections, citing the latter’s efforts to combat ‘thieves’ in government and to allocate 5% of each agency’s budget to gender development.
