Sassa Gurl’s withdrawal of support for senatorial candidate Heidi Mendoza receives mixed reactions

Due to the politician’s stance on same-sex marriage, content creator Sassa Gurl has decided to withdraw her support for senatorial candidate Heidi Mendoza.

With choosing “qualified no” in passing the SOGIE Bill, Mendoza said that “with the existing legal and enabling environment, there are many things that need to be explored if we are to protect everyone from unjust discrimination and abuse.” She then hopes that this won’t be a single issue based on choosing a candidate and that she is willing to listen.

Sassa Gurl stated that while she respects the former commissioner of the Commission of Audit (COA), she withdrew her support for her in a post on X (formerly Twitter) last April 8.

Paumanhin at pasasalamat po sa inyo [I am respecting Mam Heidi Mendoza’s stance on the issue regarding marriage equality, so I regret to announce that I am withdrawing my support. I hope for your understanding of my decision. My apology and thanks to you],” her post reads.

Mendoza then wrote, “No problem!” after reposting the content creator’s statement. “Maraming maraming salamat pa din [Still thank you very much].”

Sassa Gurl’s decision drew criticism and confusion online, with many questioning her reasons for withdrawing support.

Meanwhile, others came to the content creator’s defense, arguing that she had every right to change her stance.

Back in March, Sassa Gurl stated that she would support Mendoza in the May 2025 midterm elections, citing the latter’s efforts to combat ‘thieves’ in government and to allocate 5% of each agency’s budget to gender development.
