On May 2, 2021, the world’s biggest stage for ideas worth spreading is back in the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) with its latest installment TEDxUPLB 2021: Sign of the Times. For the first time, TEDxUPLB will take place virtually via Zoom Conference from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM PST.
This year’s theme, Sign of the Times, explores historic breakthroughs and futuristic visions in defining society’s existing ideas. It is an avenue where people can pause, rewind, and envision what comes ahead. This year’s speakers include Dr. Jayeel Cornelio, Engr. Cherrys Abrigo, Dr. Ronilo Flores, Dr. Jomar Rabajante, E Del Mundo, and Alanah Torralba.
TEDxUPLB is an event independently organized by a group of UPLB students through a license granted by TED, committed to expanding the community’s platform to share ideas inside and outside the university. It is organized by undergraduate students of UPLB, spearheaded by the following recognized organizations: The UP Community Broadcasters’ Society Inc., UPLB Grange Association, and UP Model United Nations.
The first TEDxUPLB happened in the year 2013 with the theme, “Power to the People.” This event was headed by a group of professors from the UPLB Department of Social Sciences. In 2018, it returned with the theme, “Blueprints,” which marked the start of the event being handled by the three organizations and other student volunteers. The following year, ideas that deviated from the status quo were the focus of TEDxUPLB 2019 with “Deviate.” Throughout these years, the platform was graced with the presence and knowledge of many esteemed speakers like Jiggy Manicad, Mikey Bustos, Dr. Rogel Sese, Dr. Reina Reyes, among others.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local,
self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.
TED is a nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics — from science to business to global issues — in more than 100 languages. Meanwhile, independently run TEDx events help share ideas in communities around the world.
With the ongoing health crisis, hearing new ideas becomes all the more relevant and helpful. TEDxUPLB 2021: Sign of the Times is a free online event. Catch us on Zoom and Facebook Live this May 2, 2021!
