Ed Sheeran wins first-ever Emmy award for ‘Ted Lasso’ song

Awards season has truly started ramping up again, from the Golden Globes, to the long postponed Emmys. After a big stretch of hiatus in solidarity of the actor and writer strikes that called for contract reforms and protection of entertainment workers from being exploited by media giants, recognition for these workers and artisans are now alive once again.

One of the people awarded for their contribution for entertainment this past year was pop sensation Ed Sheeran, along with Max Martin and Foy Vance, as they won their first Primetime Emmys last January 6th, 2024. They took the award for outstanding original music and lyrics for “A Beautiful Game,” for the season 3 finale of Apple+ series, Ted Lasso, “So Long, Farewell.”

In a Facebook reel and Instagram post, Sheeran shared a behind-the-scenes look at himself recording and assisting with the production of the song. He also included a heartfelt caption expressing his gratitude for the support on the show and their work.

He stated that he was disappointed that he was unable to attend the ceremony for the Emmy Awards, as he was preparing for his Asian Tour this January and through March of 2024. He expressed that was happy and thankful nonetheless. He was surprised to wake up to the announcement of their win, as he stated that he was not expecting to win for it especially when they started writing the song roughly 2 years ago.

Sheeran and Martin wrote the song with themes of love and football. He went so far as to record chanting from his fans in one of his shows during his tour to capture the “chanting” sound that fans create, frequently heard in stadium games and concerts alike.

The singer-songwriter released “A Beautiful Game” in May last year and announced the single just one day before the finale was set to air.

The other nominated song from Season 3 of Ted Lasso was the Queen-inspired track called “Fought & Lost,” co-written and performed by British singer-songwriter Sam Ryder featuring English musician Brian May of Queen and Bulgarian musical composer George Strezov. The category also included original songs from Netflix’s ‘Ginny & Georgia,’ Showtime’s T’he L Word: Generation Q,’ Prime Video’s ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’ as well as Roku’s Weird: ‘The Al Yankovic Story.’
