This new meme format originated from a viral video featuring a cat named Luna crunching her food. Luna has amassed over 2.8 million followers on TikTok, where people from around the world watch videos of her savoring treats.
Frequently shared with the hashtag #ASMR, the cat’s satisfying crunch while eating has gained widespread popularity and is used in videos associated with ASMR.
Now that it is being used as a meme, people have been applying this format to various scenarios, particularly those unrelated to things that one can eat, which contrasts with what the cat is doing in the original video.
Apparently, there is a mental health condition associated with this behavior called “Pica.” It is an eating disorder in which a person compulsively consumes non-food items without nutritional value or purpose. Depending on when and why a person engages in this behavior, pica can be considered normal, expected, and harmless. However, of course, it can lead to major issues if a person with this condition ingests something toxic.
The word “Pica” derives its name from the Eurasian magpie (from the Latin name Pica Pica), a species of bird that is known for eating unusual objects.
