Filipino mobile game ‘Galà’ teaches players about Philippine history and culture

The Philippines has much to offer aside from its beautiful beaches and delicious food. Some are coming up with different ways to help teach others and spread awareness about our country’s rich history and culture — an example of which is Galà, a mobile game created by indie game developer kendikorp.

Galà is the first-ever mobile game developed locally that focuses our own history and culture. It’s a free-to-play mobile game that takes players on a road trip to explore various locations in the Philippines all the while learning about each location included in the trip.

Galà – a Filipino word that directly translates to “traveling” or “wandering around” – is a free-to-play mobile game that takes its players on a field trip without requiring them to leave their homes. The development studio came up with the game concept because of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it has caused students to miss out on having field trips these past two years. With this, the studio created Galà as a way for players to go on a virtual field trip so that they can learn about the rich history and culture of some locations in the Philippines without having to leave home.

In Galà, players travel to and explore several locations in the Philippines, where they must work with fellow students to generate ideas and make cultural discoveries. The game features the Philippines’ culture at the center of its gameplay.

As of writing, Galà is still in development and will be officially launched in late 2022. It is kendikorp’s first commercial project, made possible by the Cultural Center of the Philippines’ first-ever Game Development Grant. /TV
