Fantasy series ‘The Witcher’ begins production for season 3

Sharpen your swords and prepare to fight monsters as we return to the Continent for The Witcher season 3!

Following the huge success of its second season, the cast of the fantasy series The Witcher has reunited to officially kick off production for its third season.

The announcement came from the show’s Twitter account, where it wrote: “Our family is back together again. #TheWitcher Season 3 is officially in production!”

The post was also accompanied by a behind-the-scenes image featuring the original cast, namely Henry Cavill, Anya Chalotra, and Freya Allan, sitting in the middle of a snowy field. Cavill, Chalotra, and Allan will reprise their roles as Geralt of Rivia, Yennefer of Vengerberg and Princess Ciri of Cintra, respectively.

To make things more exciting, the show also offered a first glimpse of what season 3 will be about.

The summary reads: “As monarchs, mages, and beasts of the Continent compete to capture her, Geralt takes Ciri of Cintra into hiding, determined to protect his newly reunited family against those who threaten to destroy it. Entrusted with Ciri’s magical training, Yennefer leads them to the protected fortress of Aretuza, where she hopes to discover more about the girl’s untapped powers; instead, they discover they’ve landed on a battlefield of political corruption, dark magic, and treachery. They must fight back, put everything on the line — or risk losing each other forever.”

Based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s book series of the same name, which also became a video game series, The Witcher follows the stories of Geralt, Yennefer, and Ciri, where the witcher vows to become the protector of Ciri and keep her safe and away from evil pursuers who want to use her magic for evil purposes.

The first season of The Witcher—which debuted on December 20, 2019—covered Sapkowski’s books The Last Wish (1993) and Sword of Destiny (1992). On the other hand, the second season—released on December 17, 2021—adapted Blood of Elves (1994), and some parts of The Last Wish (1993) and Time of Contempt (1995). Meanwhile, the third season will also feature Blood of Elves (1994) and Time of Contempt (1995), as per showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (via Showbiz CheatSheet).

News about The Witcher season 3 first circulated when it was announced that the show was officially renewed for a new season, along with a second anime feature film and Kids and Family series.

As of writing, The Witcher has yet to release the official date for its third season. However, fans of the series won’t have to wait longer to return to the Continent as its prequel, The Witcher: Blood of Origin, is set to arrive this year.
