It looks like Shawn Mendes is now setting the record straight about the alleged love triangle involving him, Camila Cabello, and Sabrina Carpenter.
In case you didn’t know: earlier this year, the internet was filled with plenty of speculations surrounding the three artists after Carpenter dropped her sixth studio album, “Short n’ Sweet,” this August.
Fans have theorized that some songs, like “Taste,” “Sharpest Tool,” and “Coincidence,” from the “Espresso” hitmaker’s recent record alluded to her brief relationship with Mendes before the “Stitches” singer and Cabello rekindled their romance (and splitting again) in early 2023.
While none of the stars have publicly addressed the situation and confirmed any details of it, they have been throwing a few hints (and shade) here and there, which drove fans into a frenzy.
A case in point was Cabello’s performance during the 2024 iHeartRadio Music Festival where she skipped the word “taste” in the lyric “You say we’re just friends / But friends don’t know the way you…” from the song, “Señorita,” her chart-topping duet with Mendes.
And now, Mendes appeared to break his silence and addressed the whole affair.
In a recent interview with John Mayer, Mendes admitted—without naming names—that he was with someone when he was still processing his feelings about his old flame.
“I’m with someone. Two days before going to hang with my ex, [I] express I’m going to hang with my ex because I have unresolved feelings,” Mendes recalled.
“Maybe instead of two days it could have been two weeks,” he added, explaining that he could have given his partner at the time some heads up two weeks prior to “hanging out” with his ex.
Looking back, the “Treat You Better” singer also shared the biggest takeaway he had learned from that experience.
“The biggest lesson I’ve learned is no one gets out of this life without getting hurt… and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone,” said the 26-year-old singer.
Mendes and Mayer, who previously dated Katy Perry and Taylor Swift, also discussed the feeling of having songs written about them by their famous exes, agreeing that “it sucks.”
“It sucks… It’s a funny feeling to feel like you’re being written about, and maybe the whole picture isn’t being expressed,” shared Mendes.
Nonetheless, he added that this experience won’t stop him from potentially falling in love with fellow musicians.
“The suffering that is from hearing a song talking about you in a way you don’t want to be talked about is not even close to the beauty of falling in love with someone for the first time,” he said.
