The University of the Philippines Speech Communication Association (UP SPECA), rooted in its aspiration to break barriers through communication, launches the first ever online version of the anticipated Youth Speech Congress (YSC) 2022 — a two-day forum and a series of competitions that aims to highlight the importance and role of the youth in different societal issues, especially in our current circumstances.
High School students and their teachers are encouraged to join and celebrate the power of the youth in effecting changes in their own ways. Participants can have a chance to win cash prizes and gifts from our sponsors.The event will be held from May 6 to 7, 2022 via Zoom and Facebook Live.
The YSC was launched last 2017, and since then, it has been a manifestation of UP SPECA’s commitment to promote the power and increase the significance of Speech Communication, not just within the university, but in the country as well. With a theme of “Leadership and Communication amidst a Pandemic”, YSC 2022 brings upon four (4) sub-events that will help the youth to realize the importance of communication:
YSC Symposia
Have a listen to what our speakers have to say about Vaccines, COVID-19 and Education, and Youth Leadership in the midst of a pandemic, as they tap into their expertise to further explain the interplay of these very timely and relevant topics with communication.
Impromptu Speaking Competition
Do you want to be the next Miss Universe? Do you enjoy and take pride in delivering effective speeches within a limited time? Then come join the Impromptu Speaking sub-event of YSC which will test the rhetoric, wit, and quick-thinking of our participants. The topics to be discussed will be based on the YSC symposia.
International Speech Competition
This is inspired by the Toastmasters International. Speakers will deliver a 5-7 minute speech on a subject given prior to the event. It is a memorized speech that will test the speaker’s oral interpretation of the literary piece, as well as their ability to move and captivate the audience’s attention.
Idea Pitch Competition
Lastly, as the highlight of YSC, the Idea Pitch Competition aims to challenge the participants’ creativity and critical thinking by urging them to think of sustainable and achievable programs that will further their chosen advocacy. As we know, by effectively reaching a wider audience, our advocacy can also be realized.
Although the pandemic poses a great challenge and has brought various limitations, UP SPECA sees the bigger picture and remains steadfast in promoting that we can break barriers through communication, especially in such limiting situations like the COVID-19 pandemic.

With its humble beginnings in 2017, with just 10 participating schools, Youth Speech Congress has grown through the years and has now become a staple and at the forefront of promoting the importance of communication in our everyday lives.
