Aside from the usual emojis, GIFs or memes have become a “visual tool” to convey emotion, especially when things get a little awkward or exciting. And for the past few decades, the internet has provided us with a myriad of hilarious, on point GIFs or memes—from Nicolas Cage and Drake to The Simpsons.
When it comes to reaction GIFs, there is no show like The Simpsons that can give us an endless list of meme-worthy episodes. Created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company, the longest-running animated TV series about a “politically incorrect family” has entertained all of us with its complex humor.
And last Sunday, The Simpsons once again amused fans by going meta! The TV series’ official Twitter account shared a new GIF, including an old GIF from a memorable 1994 episode.
The tweet was captioned: “Time to head back into the bushes! Another episode of #TheSimpsons in the books,” showed Homer texting Lisa about his missing phone to which Lisa replied, “You’re texting on it.”
Out of embarrassment, Homer responded with the famous GIF of himself slowly disappearing into the bushes. This classic GIF is taken from the episode “Homer Loves Flanders,” where Homer desperately wanted to watch a football game so he befriended his neighbor, Ned.

This meta moment only shows that The Simpsons is a no stranger to internet memes. And just like the rest of us, Homer Simpson knows exactly when and how to use his own GIF.
