During the London Pride March last Saturday, the actors of Netflix’s coming-of-age series, “Heartstopper,” proudly raised their middle fingers as a response to religious, anti-queer protestants.

On July 1, the queer love show’s cast Joe Locke, Kit Connor, Yasmine Finney, Sebastian Croft, Will Gao, Tobie Donovan, and Kizzy Edgell, together with writer and creator Alice Oseman and producer Patrick Walters, had their own float and waved to fans during the annual Pride parade. The float approached a small group of religious and homophobic protesters, and the actors snapped back at them by doing a dirty finger, dancing to the beat of the music, and singing along to Whitney Houston’s song, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” while blowing sweet kisses to the crowd.
Before this scenario, the cast was seen dancing to Beyonce’s hit and interacting with their supporters by taking photos together. Locke could be seen swaying through the rhythm of Kylie Minogue’s song, “Padam Padam”. Finney, on the other hand, stood out in a pride flag wrapped around her shoulders as support to the rainbow community.
This isn’t the first time that some Heartstopper cast has flipped protesters off. In last year’s London Parade, Croft showed his joy amidst bigotry and danced in front of protesters, which can be seen in the video he uploaded on his social media platform with the caption, “Love always wins”.
Heartstopper is a story about two British teenagers who go to the fictional Truham Grammar School. Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) is a homosexual who falls in love with seatmate Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). This show also tackles the lives of Nick and Joe’s friends, Elle (Yasmin Finney), Tara (Corinna Brown), Tao (William Gao), and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell).
On the same day of the Parade, a teaser for Season 2 of the series was released. It was also announced that all episodes of the newest season will be available to stream on August 3.
