Japanese Mint releases ‘Evangelion’ coin sets to celebrate 25th anniversary

The Evangelions and their fight against the Angels is over, but they will never be forgotten.

In commemoration of its 25th anniversary, the popular japanese animation series “Neon Genesis Evangelion” will have themed coined sets issued by the Japanese Mint.

There are two versions of the coin sets that will be released.

The “Eva Unit 01” will be limited to 20,000 sets featuring unused mirror-finish proof coins with a special leather case, and will cost 13,700 yen ($129) for retail. The proof coin set includes six denominations of Japanese coins in circulation, as well as a silver medal highlighting the color print of the iconic Unit 01, the Evangelion that was piloted by the series’ main protagonist Shinji Ikari.

The cheaper version “Shinji and Rei” will have 50,000 available sets, and will feature regular unused coins costing 2,500 yen ($24). The set includes six coins in circulation and a tombac medal of Shinji Ikari as well as Rei Ayanami, which is the pilot of the Evangelion 00.

The sets will be available for pre-ordering until September 17, and customers will be chosen through a lottery if pre-orders exceed the number of available sets.

After making its imprint in the mecha anime genre (robot anime), the Evangelion franchise is considered to be one of the greatest anime to ever air on TV.
