POP! Exclusive: Interview with Dominic Chin and the joy of falling in love via new single ‘Better’

Singapore’s very own Dominic Chin continues to impress music fans with his masterful and engaging take on pop music. His latest release, “Better” serves as the fifth single of his 7-track debut EP, License To Cry via Umami Records.

It’s another bright, lilting tune that speaks of the joyful feeling of falling in love with someone. Inquirer Pop recently chatted with the singer-songwriter and musician to discuss the details about his new track, how fun it is to be part of such inspiring process, and what makes the song a cut above the rest.

What was your inspiration for BETTER?

This song is inspired by love! There’s a quote that says “falling in love is the best high without breaking the law”, and I fully agree! The whole chorus talks about how flowers smell better, time passes much slower, the sky is BLUE-ER. How you don’t ever want time to stop when you’re with the person you love.

Who is this special person who has you so hopelessly in love? Details please!

What’s your favourite part of the song?

My favourite part of the song is actually the chorus. I love a loud, high chorus, and I was able to do that with this one. I felt like it needed a quirky aspect too, and that’s why I sang ‘You-you-you’ with a slight yodle. AND I love showing off my whistling skills. I have been practicing for years, finally I can properly show it off!

What makes this song stand out for you?

I think it’s the happiest song I’ve ever done. Lyrically, musically. My producers actually felt that the song might be TOO happy, but we all love it and we’re gonna go with it! It’s a fun song.

What was the most fun part of making this song?

I think the formulation of the instrumentation was the most fun because we just kept layering things above one another. At one point we were thinking of including a trumpet track as well, perhaps we’ll leave that for the live performance? It was a blast just creating something so happy and fun.

And one last thing you want to say to your fans?

Sometimes we are afraid to love because we are afraid to be hurt, and we don’t say what we feel as much, we don’t communicate enough. Let this song be a dedication to your significant other. Being in love is scary but it’s one of the most beautiful things in the world for humans to experience. “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.”
