Hunting ‘wabbits’ without guns: Elmer Fudd, Yosemite Sam go gunless in new ‘Looney Tunes’ series

It looks like we’ll no longer hear Yosemite Sam (one of Bugs Bunny’s nemeses) utter his catchphrase: “I’m the fastest gun north, south, east, aaaaaaaand west of the Pecos!” as he goes gunless in the rebooted Looney Tunes series on HBO Max. The same thing goes with Elmer Fudd whose habit has always been “hunting wabbits” ever since his first official debut on A Wild Hare in 1940.

But the removal of lethal weapons from the villains’ arsenals doesn’t mean they have to go on hunting trips empty-handed. While this major decision has already been set in stone, the production team ensures to retain Looney Tunes’ classic slapstick humor.

In an interview with the New York Times, Looney Tunes Cartoons Executive Producer Peter Browngardt said that they’re stripping Elmer and Sam of their rifles or shotguns.

“We’re not doing guns but we can do cartoony violence — TNT, the Acme stuff. All of that was kind of grandfathered in,” explained Browngardt. According to multiple news outlets, the big change in the new series is probably its “response” to America’s gun-culture problem.
