This invention is what everyone needs to get out of that boring virtual meeting

Ever since the “confinement period” started, interacting with our friends, families, and colleagues virtually has become more common today than in the past. With the way we live now, our only means to stay connected—no matter how much we hate seeing our faces on our phone screens—is to go face-to-face via video chat apps.

In an article written by The Verge, they defined “video calling” as a regular occurrence. Every day, we find ourselves caught in the same scenario: sitting for hours in front of our laptops while listening to hundreds of other people talking simultaneously in a virtual class.

Sure, a Zoom conversation with 100 participants sounds like a thrilling experience but for a person like you who prefers chats to calls, how would you escape this nightmare?

Luckily, you don’t have to worry about that because Marina Fujiwara (a Japanese engineer and comedian) already solved the problem for you. Although Fujiwara is known for devising useless and ridiculous creations, her latest project called Loading Circle Machine for Escape from Zoom is definitely something that we will be needing to get out of a boring online meeting—without being too rude.

On Twitter, Fujiwara shared a 40-second video of how her invention works.

Fujiwara used a battery-operated device called “EMERGENCY ESCAPE.” Once you press the button, a mechanical arm will automatically extend upward. But to use it in real life, you need to gracefully execute the following steps.

  1. Strike a pose (with your one hand placed on your lap) as if your internet suddenly dropped.
  2. Don’t move until you’re able to press the EMERGENCY ESCAPE button, which will launch the mechanical arm with a loading circle symbol attach to its tip.
  3. Again, use your other hand to reach your PC’s mouse and click out of the chat.

After Fujiwara’s tweet went viral, online users have been sharing their thoughts about her “newest contraption.” One online user commented “I want to use it when I am asked to answer an unknown question in an online class,” to which another person replied with “You don’t have to do that, but you can purposely disconnect the internet line once.”

Apart from the Loading Circle Machine for Escape, Fujiwara also invented a machine that helps you scratch your face as a way of minimizing the spread of COVID-19.

Well, what else do we have to say here? Necessity is indeed the mother of invention.
