An 8-year-old boy from Tampa, Florida, in the US has created his own charity to share his love of reading among his peers.
Reading used to be just a hobby for Landric Keys, but it was only a matter of time before this hobby turned into a passion, as per Fox 13 on Feb 13.
“I learned my love of reading from my kindergarten teacher,” Landric said in the report. “Reading is inside every subject and if you don’t know how to read, you could fail.”
Landric created his charity “Landric’s Read and Share” in an effort to show his peers just how important reading is. It is an initiative that sees him going to different elementary schools to read to students and giving them books to bring home.
“It caught us by surprise,” LaSante Keys, Landric’s father, said in the report. “He said he wanted to start his own charity and I want to be able to give to preschoolers and to the elderly who don’t have.”
Landric, however, could not have started it without his great-grandmother’s help. It was his great-grandmother’s Christmas gift that allowed him to turn his goal into reality.
“When my great-grandmother gave me $100 (approx. P5,000) for Christmas, she asked me what I planned to do with it,” Landric said. “And I said I wanted to start my own charity called ‘Landric’s Read and Share.’”
Meanwhile, his parents, LaSante and Zenita, are nothing short of proud of him and are ready to support their son, no matter what he wants to achieve.
“We’re just proud of him and we always tell him that the [sky’s] the limit,” Zenita said in the report. “Whatever he wants to do, we’re always supportive of him and if there is something he wants to do, we’ll always support and do what we can to help him accomplish his goals.” /ra
