Musical film ‘Indak’ highlights the Filipinos’ artistry and passion for dance

‘Indak’ is a dance-heavy musical that stars Nadine Lustre and Sam Concepcion. Directed by Paul Basinillo, the film features an island girl from Cebu’s Bantayan Island named Jen (Lustre), who has a passion for dancing. As the movie progresses, viewers will see her become popular as a video of her dancing in the middle of the sea becomes viral–reluctantly catching the interest of Vin (Concepcion), the head of the dance troupe Indak Pinas. And when Vin asks Jen to join his group, they go through a dance journey like no other!

If you haven’t watched the dance flick yet, here are a few ways the movie explored the significance of love, passion, and self-discovery.

Jen and Vin’s love story

Aside from the different dance performances and production numbers, the storyline also features the loveteam of Jen and Vin. Their love story is different because it is less of a “rosy romance” and drama relationship, rather it is one that is held together by support and encouragement.  For instance, Jen and Vin supported one another throughout the dance competition, wherein, Vin not only helped Jen overcome her insecurities and stage fright but through his efforts, he was also able to help her get to know herself better. And as Jen continued to showcase her dancing skills to became one of the group’s strongest dancers, Vin was there for her.

Sam Concepcion’s and Nadine Lustre’s portrayals of these characters made for a refreshing Filipino film. Aside from dancing, the other characters’ acting and singing skills made up a well-executed and choreographed series of events.

Finding your true self through your passion

Finding your passion means being enthusiastic and inspired about doing something. In this movie, Jen is passionate about dancing but hesitant to pursue her dreams because she’s taking care of her ailing mother (Yayo Aguila). Eventually, in the film, Vin will convince Jen to join their group and head to South Korea to participate in a major dance competition.

These characters confidently showed their different ideals and ambitions, in spite of their complex situations. Aspiring dancers will definitely be inspired to see characters who are happy to groove onstage with dedication, grace, and determination.
