Streetwear and 1990s among major fashion trends in 2019 — report

What do cycling shorts, scrunchies, fanny packs, logo sweatshirts and crop tops have in common? The 1990s! The decade, which was marked by looks that have often been criticized, came back in force on runways and in the street in 2019.

As Lyst points out, most of the iconic creations of the 1990s found new favor with fashion addicts this year, in particular crop-tops, square-toed heels and camisole dresses. And let us not forget the 137% increase in searches for cycling shorts in just one year.

The appetite for streetwear was not on the wane either, on the contrary, it was boosted by the increasing popularity of sneakers (notably luxury sneakers) and numerous collaborations in the sector, among them Sacai x Nike and Reformation x New Balance. According to the annual report from Lyst, consumers spent an average of 192 dollars for a pair of sneakers this year, which amounts to an increase of 39% when compared to the same period last year.

More sustainable fashion

At a time when brands are progressively committing to reduce their environmental impact, consumers are also demonstrating a growing interest in a sustainable fashion. The “Year In Fashion” report points to a 75% increase in searches including keywords linked to sustainability, with an average of 27,000 searches per month on the topic.

Repreve appears to be the most popular sustainable fabric with an increase of 130% in searches, ahead of econyl (+102%), organic cotton (+52%) and Tencel (+42%).

Will space take off in 2020?

According to the report, certain trends will likely be stellar in 2020, first and foremost clothing inspired by space and space exploration. On this point, Lyst refers to the 2020 spring-summer shows, which turned a spotlight on a profusion of holographic prints and outdoor wear suggestive of spacesuits.

To create its report, Lyst took into account internet searches by no less than 104 million shoppers, notably the pages that were viewed, and sales figures for six million products sold by 12,000 online shops, along with social media mentions of fashion brands and trends. RGA
