‘Sobrang Latina’ takes over social media—here’s why everyone’s saying it

‘Sobrang Latina’ is social media’s new favorite catchphrase. But what does this really mean?

It started when TikTok content creator, Sesable, posted a video of her flaunting her makeup look similar to the looks of Latina women known for their well-defined and bold looks. Sesable made sure to take a moment and appreciate her makeup look, with the caption “POV: Sobrang ganda ng make up ko.” During the video, Sesable, with an eager facial expression, pointed at the screen and said, “Sobrang Latina!”

The words of self-affirmation did not quite stop there, “Sobrang ganda mo! Kagwapa ba oy. Grabe, ang pagka-monyeka sa babae. Monyeka, Latina, gorgeous!” Sesable’s humor easily drew laughs from viewers and has since garnered 5.5 million views on TikTok.

Social media users were quick to hop on the trend and use Sesable’s original audio with their own recreation of the ‘Sobrang Latina’ trend.

For one, newly crowned Reina Hispanoamericana, Dia Mate used Sesable’s audio shortly after her victorious vie on the Latin beauty pageant. Social media users quickly dubbed her as ‘Latina Slayer.’

Actress Kris Bernal made sure not to miss on the trend, she perfectly nailed dubbing Sesable’s audio matched with her full-face Latina look-alike makeup with a sharp eyeliner, long false lashes, contoured cheeks, and full lips.

Meanwhile, Buboy Villar played dress up to recreate the TikTok trend. In the comments section, users poked fun of Villar where some commented that they failed to recognize who it was not until they saw the username. Some users acted confused on whether he looked like Ryza Mae Dizon or Tuesday Vargas.

In an unexpected turn of events, senatorial candidate Kiko Pangilinan found his way through the ‘Sobrang Latina’ trend. During one of his TikTok live sessions, a user commented the catchphrase, which left Pangilinan confused and turned to his staff for help. Although seemingly un-updated with recent Gen Z trends, quickly caught up with the mention of his wife “Aba syempre si Sharon, sobrang sobrang Latina!”

‘Sobrang Latina’ rebranded how one should give away compliments while at the same time doubling as a comedic phrase over various online contexts.
