Six-time Grammy nominee Julia Michaels stays true to herself with ‘unapologetic’ music

American singer-songwriter Julia Michaels continues to make strides in the industry by staying true to herself, for which is well reflected in her musical style and songwriting.

Michaels welcomed the new year with her new single ‘Scissors’ released last January 25 in collaboration with Maren Morris. The song blended R&B and pop, and Michaels’ playful and biting lyrics tucked within it.

This was not the first time Michaels and Morris teamed up for a song. They previously collaborated as a singer and songwriter for Maren Morris’ ‘Cut!’ as part of the album ‘Intermission.’

In an exclusive interview with POP!, Michaels divulged that their collaboration was a funny yet perfect coincidence which they shared over text, “I said [to Morris], well funnily enough you have a song called ‘Cut!’ [and] I have a song called ‘Scissors.’ Would you want to do it with me?” The synonymous titles yet the difference in lyrical concept and approach made their collaboration pleasantly worthwhile.

Late last year, in November, Michaels also released ‘Heaven II,’ the first song she put out as an independent artist, which has ultimately held more importance for her as a creative, “it felt significant for me in that way.”

Through her music, Michaels was able to express different facets of her personality and creativity. Fans would never be bored of what Michaels put on the table as she has always crafted her music distinctively such as the case of ‘Scissors’ and ‘Heaven II,’ “‘Heaven II’ was definitely more on the sexual side, it’s very freeing, it’s very liberated. And ‘Scissors’ is more satirical and funny and doesn’t take itself too seriously. And I think those two songs definitely encapsulate my personality.”

Looking at the overview of her works, the six-time Grammy nominee surely took pride in her songwriting and musical style, “Lyrics are a huge part of what I do and it’s something that I really cherish in my job.” She shared that it was an honor to be nominated, especially under the ‘Song of the Year’ category which felt like the ultimate validation coming from her peers within the industry for all her works and efforts as an artist.

In a nutshell, her musical style is plucked out from the various facets of her as a person and it is something that she translates through her music, “The music that I typically create leans on the vulnerable side. I feel like I’m known for being very emotional, very authentic to myself, [and] unapologetic. But, I also feel like I have a sense of humor, and I can lean a little sexy.”

Her authenticity and spontaneity in music are only a few of the things fans surely loved about her. As such, Michaels is looking forward to sharing her music in front of the people who have supported her throughout her career. “We’re gonna start doing some rehearsals soon to talk about live shows and touring and what that’s gonna look like and where we’re gonna go,” she divulged.

There is much to look forward to as Michaels has more music in store for her fans this year, “I love you guys and I’m hoping to see you all and meet you all in the future very soon.”
