The award-winning 2016 film, ‘Die Beautiful’ is set to have a makeover as a theatrical musical this 2025. This came after the film’s Director, Jun Robles Lana revealed that film studio The IdeaFirst Company’s next project this 2025 will be ‘Die Beautiful The Musical.’
Riding the highs of last year’s box office success and official entry for the 50th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF), ‘And the Breadwinner Is…’ Lana is set to continue his winning streak this year with the live-action adaptation of ‘Die Beautiful’ which was also his entry for the 42nd MMFF and has since been marked as one of his notable works as a director and co-producer.
The Filipino-LGBT comedy-drama film followed the life and death of Trisha Echevarria, played by Paolo Ballestero, on non-linear storytelling of her life as a gay beauty pageant contestant wherein she fell into her demise shortly after winning the crown. Her friends held an unconventional wake for her which transformed Echevarria through different makeovers in semblance of renowned local and international personalities—all the while fighting the forces of Echevarria’s father to bury her as a man.
During the time the movie was produced, the film’s main cast, Ballesteros, was known for his make-up transformations to emulate the looks of various celebrities. These transformations were among the main driving forces of the story which was carried out by Ballesteros himself.
Beyond the glamors of each look, the film explored various societal themes and circumstances faced by the LGBTQIA+ community. ‘Die Beautiful’ was a whirlwind of emotional, heartfelt, and comedic scenes and one could only wonder how much further the musical adaptation can take this storytelling to greater heights.
Expectations and anticipations are on the table as ‘Die Beautiful’ was an award-winning film and garnered critical acclaim locally and internationally.
Lana revealed that Rody Vera, his co-writer from the original 2016 film will write for ‘Die Beautiful’s’ stage adaptation. Although there are no details yet in terms of casting and creative team members, this upcoming musical will surely be one of the shows to watch out for this 2025.
