Love bittersweet endings? Here are four Filipino films you can watch

As much as Filipinos love clicheic romantic comedy storylines, we cannot just stray away from films with bittersweet endings. So, here are just four of the many Filipino films you can watch.

Seasons

This film brings us the pair of Lovi Poe and Carlo Aquino. The film follows two best friends who already went through several failed relationships. Both of them make a deal to take risks and find love once more. Despite seeing many films in the past have the same trope, the chemistry between the two leads is something special that can hurt you as you watch through their story in the film. It is a lighthearted story, one that gets better as you go on.

Ngayon Kaya

The film stars rumored real-life couple, Janine Gutierrez and Paulo Avelino. It focuses on two old college friends who reunited at a wedding after a few years. Old feelings start to resurface as they spend time together. The film is a story of, “what ifs,” and the right timing.

Meet Me in St. Gallen

Once you see Bella Padilla in the film, you can already expect that this will hurt you. She plays opposite Carlo Aquino, who is also known for tear-jerker films. The movie circles around the story of an aspiring painter and a frustrated musician who had a one-night stand and then go their separate ways. However, they end up meeting again in St. Gallen as two completely different people. The film has a more authentic and real drama story, something we are very familiar with films Bella Padilla is in.

I’m Drunk, I Love You

Two words: Modern classic. Paulo Avelino and Maja Salvador play as two best friends who go on their last road trip before their graduation. The film is an unrequited love story, one that has been going on for seven long years. But, actually, the story goes beyond just that. It gives viewers the feeling of being with them as they go through the road trip, their pasts, and even when talking about plans for the future. It may have ended not the way most people would want to, but it will not scar you. It brings you a refreshing take not just on love but also on life in general. From the cast’s natural chemistry to the storyline itself, this is surely one of the best.

If there is a common denominator with these films, it is their car scenes. Not to mention, the concept of, “friend zone.” Many viewers seem to be relating to these films as seen in a streaming platform’s post. I mean, there really is something about films that mirrors our realities.

So, if you plan to watch these films, do not forget to grab your snacks, and just in case, tissues.
