Roblox will now allow exclusive mature experiences for users ages 17 and above

Build-your-own gaming platform Roblox is pushing its ‘platform for all ages’ agenda by allowing a wide range of relevant and engaging content catered to all ages, said the Chief Product Officer of the company, Manuel Bronstein, in a press release.

“Roblox is a platform for all ages where no matter how old people are, they can connect with friends and discover a wide range of relevant, engaging, and age-appropriate experiences,” Bronstein wrote.

According to Bronstein, those aged 17 to 24 are the fastest-growing users of the platform, with 38% of the daily active users of the platform were of 17 years of age and older in 2022– prompting them to allow creators to make contents that are specifically catered to that audience.

The company launched an updated Experience Guidelines earlier this year, including the guidelines for ages 17 and up. Under this category, it is stated that the content “may contain intense violence, heavy realistic blood, moderate crude humor, romantic themes, unplayable gambling content, and/or the presence of alcohol.”

As such, they assured that only those whose ages are verified will be allowed to create and use these contents. This will be made possible by requiring the users to upload a selfie and a photo of a government-issued ID to be verified.

Moreover, aside from reporting and blocking content and users, the company will also update its Community Standards and Policies to better oversee contents that are appropriate for the said age groups.

“Safety and civility is our top priority. We have an expert team of thousands of people dedicated to monitoring for safety on Roblox 24/7. We conduct a safety review of every single image, video, and audio file uploaded to Roblox before that content is posted on the platform, using a combination of human and machine detection,” said a spokesperson of Roblox to Gizmodo.
