Zoe Terakes expresses deep gratitude for being Marvel’s first trans actor

It’s undeniable that even in this day and age, members of the LGBTQIA+ community are still fighting for their rights to be taken seriously by society. One of the ways the community is addressing this is by making sure there is visibility for its members, by way of ‘representation’ in media.

Today, another big leap for the community has just been recorded when Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), a prominent American media franchise centered on superhero flicks, recently added its first ‘trans actor’ to the ‘superhero’ squad.

Australian star Zoe Terakes, a non-binary and transman, has been cast in Disney+’s newest series “Ironheart.” In an interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff in Park City during Sundance, the Aussie actor expressed their ‘gratefulness’ for this ‘unusual’ opportunity of becoming a ‘representation’ of trans people on the big screen.

Terakes shared that growing up, trans individuals initially don’t see themselves getting anywhere, mainly in superhero shows and films. Now that the 22-year-old is part of a pool of characters with superpowers, they feel deeply grateful that trans youngsters have ‘something to look at’ and that they ‘belong’ in the community.

“We don’t just belong in trauma stories on the fringes dying in things, you know? We belong there with the big guys. So yeah, it meant a lot to me,” Terakes said.

Last year, Zoe Terakes was announced to be part of the upcoming Marvel Studios series. The “Ironheart” star has taken on an ‘important’ role in the show, which means that the Marvel fans under the trans umbrella definitely have something to watch out for.

“Ironheart” follows the story of Riri William (Dominique Thorne), a super-genius teen who builds her own suit of advanced armor and becomes Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) inheritor. She then lives a life full of heroic deeds like humanitarianism and crime fighting.

Created by Chinaka Hodge, Disney+ Ironheart is set to premiere on Disney+ later in 2023.
